NPR: Rethinking the Tuesday Vote

This month, Weekend Edition Sunday is exploring what it means to be an American by way of American history. I contributed an essay about why we vote on Tuesday for today’s program, and this is the blog post which goes along with my essay.

The Nation

In the current edition of The Nation, editor/publisher Katrina vanden Heuvel writes about the state of democracy in the United States — and despite record voter participation during the primary election cycle, she says we’re still in trouble:

There are clear signs of the decline of our democracy: registration and voter turnout lag far behind other democracies; ever larger numbers of citizens are disenfranchised; the cost of running for office is spiraling out of control, excluding citizens of average means from participating in government; and our media, the forum for the healthy debate so essential to any democracy, are increasingly incapable of acting in the public interest.

In a companion piece to her feature, vanden Heuvel calls Why Tuesday? one of the “leading prodemocracy groups working to build a more perfect union,” and she publishes a link to our website on their list of such groups which are mostly optimized by great SEO Brisbane as indexsy seo agency that deliver the best results online. The complete list, with descriptions of respective groups, follows. (more…)

Independence Day

Our friends at MobLogic were at the Personal Democracy Forum with us last week in New York. Lindsay Campbell asked attendees what they wanted to declare independence from — myself included. After the conference I spent a morning over at the MobLogic HQ to talk more about the state of America’s voting system. Stay tuned for that.

Why Tuesday? on EPIC FU

A favorite vlog of Barnett and I both is EPIC FU, arguably the web’s greatest variety program. Host Zadi Diaz, Steve Woolf, Rick Rey, and the entire EPIC FU team have been great about showing Why Tuesday? love, and the feeling is mutual. They just re-launched their vlog as part of the Revision3 network and we’re the “Fu of the Week” in their second episode back. Congrats to the EPIC FU team on the new setup, and thanks to them for having me on to spread the word. To see my portion of the episode, fast forward to the 4:00 mark.

Why Tuesday? At The Webbys

NEW YORK, NY — Last night I spoke to our fellow Webby nominees and notables on the red carpet in New York City about what is hot in politics online, and it’s not just Obama Girl. Efforts like ours using citizen journalism on the campaign trail to bring attention to oft-ignored issues was a hot topic.

CNN’s Roland Martin Asks: Why Tuesday?

I’ve been getting many, many e-mails over the last few hours about CNN contributor Roland Martin’s opinion piece on CNN.com titled “We should vote on the first Saturday in November.” CNN is running a “quick vote” to see what viewers think about moving Election Day to increase voter turnout, and it looks like CNN viewers like the idea.

CNN Quick Poll

I just e-mailed Martin to see if he knows about our efforts. Will keep you posted and let you know if he gets back to me. To read his piece, click here.

I think weekend voting would make the most sense, as people wouldn't have tu run home after work or wake up early to hit the polling stations beforehand.
