As Kos noted yesterday, despite last week’s wave of media enthusiasm for Clinton, Obama’s delegate lead didn’t shrink at all. The delegate math doesn’t look good for Clinton: she’ll need a big win in Pennsylvania, an upset in North Carolina, and solid victories in Florida and Michigan revotes, all still up in the air.
So, barring the unlikely, Barack Obama will preserve his delegate lead and become the Democratic nominee. At the risk of starting the Monday morning quarterbacking a bit too early, how did Obama put the Clinton machine on the brink of defeat? (more…)

PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIFORNIA — With the onset of Super Tuesday, the Press has started reporting on Barack Obama’s ability to mobilize new, youth and Independent voters, the other candidates’ advantages among established, older voters, and Hillary Clinton’s advantage among Hispanic and female voters. This week’s issue of TIME Magazine reports that Obama’s campaign tactics are more effective in states with forward-thinking election law. Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada have Same-Day Registration. Florida has early voting, but the DNC has stripped the Sunshine State’s democrats of their delegates, Republicans were able to keep half of theirs. (more…)
Daily Kos blogger Meteor Blades asked readers to respond to a poll about their feelings about an Election Day holiday. As of this posting over 6,700 people have voted, and 165 users have commented. The results are below. (more…)
“Doctor, Doctor! My feet are killing me and there is something wrong with the way I vote,” said the patient who booked the appointment one week prior.
“Well you know Election Day is hard on your feet,” explained the podiatrist who thought to himself, “Why Tuesday?”.
Well, here is our answer, Doctor. And here is a brilliant piece of writing that ties visiting the Doctor and casting a vote together on Flavors of Abruzzo. Who woulda known that market day is still on Wednesday in Italy? Enjoy.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee would consider a National Holiday for Election Day, among other election reforms he discussed with me in response to the Why Tuesday? Candidate Challenge. We chatted this past weekend at the Iowa GOP’s Reagan Dinner in Des Moines. Watch the video to find out if Huckabee knows why we vote on Tuesday. (more…)
What does U.S. Representative Dennis Kucinich think about the state of our voting system? “People want their vote counted, and they want their vote to count,” he says. Like other candidates, Kucinich talks about how candidates must inspire voters to increase turnout. But he also believes Election Day should be a National Holiday. (more…)
This just in from the Bill Richardson camp: a response to the Why Tuesday? Candidate Challenge! I’m sitting in the rafters of a theater at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA liveblogging the MTV/MySpace presidential forum with Barack Obama, as I type this. So you all are actually hearing Governor Richardson’s response to the challenge before I do. (more…)
I’m pretty sure that tomorrow night U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer appears on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm in a cameo role. I’m not positive, but I’m fairly certain after seeing the teaser for the episode, called The Anonymous Donor, just now on HBO. Last October, after driving across the country talking with our elected officials about Tuesday voting, I went behind the scenes at the episode’s filming to talk with the Senator about election reform. Check out the video below, and watch Senator Boxer tomorrow night on HBO.
Interestingly, according to the New York Times, Larry David is no stranger to the cause of election reform. To see why, click below.
Senator John Edwards, now running hard for the Democratic presidential nomination, visited UCLA today for a rally in Bruin Plaza. The Road Team’s own Jacob Soboroff had a chance to catch up with him afterwards on the Kerckhoff (sic) Patio. Jacob shouldered his way to the front of the press pool in time to be the second-to-last question Edwards answered; the presidential hopeful didn’t have a chance to really dive into the topic beyond a general affirmation of making Election Day a holiday, but with a little luck this won’t be the last time we get the opportunity to put some questions to him.
Regarding the soundtrack to this particular clip: please refer all questions to Jacob. We try to control him, but it’s very difficult.
America is going to be looking hard at a handful of politicians over the next year or so (unless some calendar-happy state moves its primaries up even further). We’re going to do our best- beginning humbly with this clip- to make sure that election reform is a part of the conversation the nation has with these candidates. An Executive Branch with a real commitment to election reform could set the tone for change, and a major campaign that addresses this issue might remind people to pay attention to something we tend to talk about AFTER elections rather than before them.
Please join us. If a candidate is coming to your town or school- pop the question, and ask them their thoughts on election reform. We all might be surprised by some of the answers we get.
Why Tuesday? is an effort to make America’s democracy stronger through increased voter participation. We work to make election reform an issue that our politicians cannot afford to avoid.
