Why Tuesday? on Iowa radio

Tune in today at 1:30PM CDT to hear me and others from our team talk about what we’re up to with Dennis Raimondi on his radio show from Fairfield, Iowa. We’re up right after a segment with Michelle Obama. The show is Speaking Freely with Dennis Raimondi. In Iowa, tune into KRUU 100.1 FM, or stream the show online.

We’re going to be heading to Fairfield from Cedar Rapids shortly to do the show in-studio.

Morning in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — There probably will not be a Tuesday episode this week because we’re on the road. Instead, we’ll continue to roll out the rest of the videos of 2008 presidential candidates who have responded to the Why Tuesday? Candidate Challenge and discussed in a video response - or with me - their feelings about the state of our voting system.

Video you can look forward to this week: in Iowa we caught up with Mike Huckabee, Tom Tancredo, Duncan Hunter, Fred Thompson… and we’ve got both Mike Gravel and Dennis Kucinich on tape too. Which candidate that we met chose not to discuss voting in America? Stay tuned to find out. (more…)

Candidate Challenge: Barack Obama

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — How did we get Senator Barack Obama to respond to the Why Tuesday? Candidate Challenge and lay out his plan for election reform? Watch the video to find out. To read my liveblog of the day’s events at the MTV/MySpace presidential dialogue, click here.

Liveblogging @ Barack Obama MTV/MySpace forum

Tom & Jacob @ MTV

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA — Sitting in the way way back row of the MTV and MySpace presidential dialogue with Barack Obama. WT? advisory board member Gideon Yago is one of the event’s hosts. No question about election reform yet, but stay tuned here for updates.

It’s hot in the rafters. After the event there will be a rally. If Obama isn’t asked directly about election reform during the event, we’ll try and bring the Why Tuesday? Candidate Challenge to him there. BTW here’s our profile on thinkMTV (more…)

Fields of Opportunity

Flight over Denver

Good morning from Denver. We had a successful trip to Fort Collins, Colorado yesterday. In next Tuesday’s episode of the vlog we’ll look at how County Clerk & Recorder Scott Doyle has worked to increase voter turnout there, and how his Vote Center model does (and doesn’t) transfer effectively to other locales. Roundup: Last week in election reform

It was a busy week for us behind the scenes at Why Tuesday?, and in the world of election reform. What is election reform exactly? And who is the guy in the photo? Get the answers, and much more election reform news, by clicking below. Photo by Cheryl Senter for the New York Times.

Election reform chatter

There has been lots of chatter about election reform over the last week or so, including calls for reform in Kentucky, a call to action for New Mexican Native Americans, and problems with voting machines at last weekend’s Iowa Straw Poll. My attempt at digesting it all (and a great cartoon) is after the jump.

Governor Tom Vilsack of Iowa (D) - “A reflection of the rural aspect of America”

The GOTW Road Team caught up with its first Governor, Tom Vilsack, in downtown Des Moines. Governor Vilsack has a pretty good handle on the answer to the question, and discussed his personal focus in election reform: mail-in-voting, a la Oregon (and much of Washington).

Update: On Thursday, November 9th, Tom Vilsack became the first officially-filed Presidential Candidate in the ‘08 race.

To all you folks checking this out, we at the Road Team wanna emphasize that we’re looking for company. We’re hitting the roads to ask the question, but to really get a national canvas we’re looking for videos taken by tons of folks from all over (plus there’s that prize money). So if you’re watching and enjoying, as we know many of you are, find out who’s coming to your area, grab a camera or videophone, and go get askin’. Don’t let us have all the fun.

Why Tuesday? is a non-partisan, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2005 to find solutions to increase voter turnout and participation in elections.
