Greetings to those finding us by way of Personal Democracy Forum 2009. Our Executive Director Jacob Soboroff is speaking June 30th on the panel Online Video: Lessons from the Obama “Idea Factory” and 2008 Campaign. This video sums up who we are and what we do. It was produced for Current TV by John Carluccio and aired on TV and on Virgin America.
I just submitted a question about election reform for the Democratic gubernatorial candidates in Virginia to Battleground Virginia, an initiative from YouTube, WLJA-TV and Politico. Vote for our question (search “voter participation” to find it), then on June 3, at 8PM ET, tune in to wjla.com or ABC7-WJLA and then watch the candidates answer the most popular questions!
It was just announced we’re nominated for what the New York Times calls “the Oscars of the Internet,” the Webby Awards! We’re nominated for Best Activism Website, but the Webby winners aren’t just the judge’s picks! Click here to vote for Why Tuesday? to win the Webby People’s Voice award. (more…)
Props to friend of Why Tuesday? Steve Garfield, one of the first video bloggers ever, for asking Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick via vlog if he’d support weekend voting. And props to the Governor for responding to Steve. (more…)
At the SXSW festival in Austin Texas, I talked earlier today with Lawrence Lessig of Change Congress about people’s faith in the American government. While we’re here, follow us on Twitter via @whytuesday. Watch my full interview with Lessig on NPR Soapbox .
In 1968, Congress passed the Monday Holiday law, which moved Memorial Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day and Washington’s Birthday from their original dates to Mondays. If we can alter our federal holidays to benefit shoppers and travelers, why can’t we move Election Day for the convenience of voters? Check out this vlog from our archives.
Even in Florida, where voter participation was higher than the national average, nearly 5 million eligible voters didn’t vote in the 2008 presidential election. I headed to Tampa to ask a question we’ve asked here before: what if we took our elections as seriously as we take the Super Bowl? Watch the video to see what Florida Governor Charlie Crist has to say about that.
I’m headed to Tampa for Super Bowl XLIII this week. Before I go, I’m posting this video we shot last year during the campaign. The Super Bowl is practically a national holiday in the United States, but Election Day isn’t, hence our low voter turnout. So, I hit Venice Beach to find out what people thought about the Super Bowl moving to a Tuesday. Why do we vote on Tuesday? Here’s the answer.
Nearly half a century has passed since the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Despite enthusiasm about Barack Obama’s historic campaign, USA voter turnout is worse than almost all nations. In the spirit of Dr. King, we’re working to spark a national discussion about voting. (more…)
Uff Da! On Election Day 2008 I visited Shiloh Christian School (amongst other places) in Bismarck, North Dakota. North Dakota is the only state in the United States without voter registration. Watch my vlog to get a behind-the-scenes look at what the polling places I checked out looked like on this “Tuesday after the first Monday in November.”
Why Tuesday? is a non-partisan, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2005 to find solutions to increase voter turnout and participation in elections.
