Citizen’s Proposal: Combining Election Day with Veterans’ Day
Friday, November 3rd, 2006
Jurgen Worthing, of Wantagh, NY, writes in with this suggestion. Take a look and tell us what you think:
Let’s make voting a patriotic duty by combining it with Veterans Day and renaming something like Patriot’s Day, Freedom Day, or Liberty Day. How better can we honor our veterans than being patriotic and voting?
Most people remember Veterans Day as the 11th day of the 11th month (even the 11th hour is celebrated.). It was also called Armistice Day between the two World Wars to comemorate the time of the signing of the World War I armistice.
Coincidentally the original armistice signing day happened also to be the second Monday in November in 1918.
Like other holiday weekends that include Monday we could make election day the second Monday in November, part of a long weekend. A great day for shopping and voting. Give discounts in stores to those who have voted. In order to identify those who have voted, the election people could stamp people’s fingers purple (like in Iraq), stamp their voter cards, or hand out voting receipts.
Let’s get talking.
